How it works
The laser emits a single wavelength of light that melanin, the pigment in hair, absorbs. That light turns to heat, travels down the hair shaft and damages the follicle's ability to grow a new hair. A burst of cooling spray lands on the skin a fraction of a second before every pulse to protect the surface.
Hair grows in cycles, and only follicles in the active growth phase respond. At any one visit that is a portion of the hairs in an area, which is why this is a series and why spacing matters. Come back too soon and there is nothing new to treat. Wait too long and you miss a cycle. Faces are usually spaced four to six weeks apart and body areas six to ten.
Best for
- Dark hair on light to medium skin
- Large areas: legs, back, chest, arms, underarms and bikini
- Ingrown hairs and razor irritation
- Anyone finished with shaving and waxing
Better handled another way
- Gray, white, blonde or red hair, which has too little pigment for the laser to find. treats these.
- Fine facial hair on women, which laser can sometimes stimulate
- Deeper skin tones, where this wavelength calls for caution. Safe options are covered at your consultation.
- Tanned skin. Wait until the tan has faded.
What to expect
- Before
- Shave the area the day before. No waxing, tweezing or threading for four weeks, because the laser needs the root in place. Stay out of the sun and skip self-tanner for two weeks. Mention any new medications, since some make skin sensitive to light.
- During
- Protective eyewear goes on, then a steady series of pulses. Underarms take a few minutes. Full legs take closer to an hour.
- After
- Mild redness and small bumps around the follicles for a few hours. Treated hairs push out over one to three weeks. It looks like regrowth and it is shedding. Wear sunscreen daily and skip hot tubs, saunas and hard workouts for 24 hours.

Straight answers
Is it permanent?
The FDA clears laser for permanent hair reduction. Most people see a large, lasting drop in hair after a full series, and what returns is usually finer and lighter. Hormones can wake up new follicles over the years, so an occasional touch-up is normal. For hairs you want gone for good, electrolysis finishes the job.
Does it hurt?
Most people describe a quick snap followed by cold. Sensitive areas are sharper, and they are also over fastest.
Why can I shave but not wax?
Shaving leaves the root in the follicle, and the root is what carries the heat down. Waxing and tweezing remove it, which leaves the laser nothing to work with.
What happens to the hairs laser misses?
Every series leaves some behind, usually the lightest and finest. Those are removed permanently with electrolysis, one at a time.
Pairs well with for the hairs laser can't see.
